General Laborer for Railroad Construction

Fred Owen Construction is currently seeking a Full-time Track laborer in the Birmingham, AL and Shelby County AL area for jobs typically to be performed within a 100-mile radius of Birmingham. We rarely perform jobs requiring overnight lodging.
Accountability: The person in this position works as a crew member to maintain, repair, and replace rails, ties, switches, and ballast. This position uses hand tools and operates heavy equipment. The position starts as a track laborer, with an opportunity to qualify as a machine operator/ CDL-A driver and track foreman.
Responsibilities:
Able to perform physical strenuous work
Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch
Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs
Requires occasional use of 30lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50lbs of force
Requires occasional use of 10lb sledgehammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75lbs of force
Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails, and ballast in a safe manner
Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary
Minimum Requirements
Live within 45 minutes of the shop location in Ensley, AL or our start location in Jemison, AL
Previous general labor or construction experience
High school degree or GED
Previous railroad track construction preferred but not required
Valid drivers license is required
Commercial Drivers License is a plus
Physical Requirements: Mobility to participate in frequent travel to and from the project location; ability to operate heavy equipment; Agility to navigate into confined spaces if necessary. Must have reliable transportation for getting to and from the shop in Ensley or Jemison each day.
Environmental Conditions: Performs duties in multiple environments including outside construction project settings, in and around moving vehicles and equipment. Exposure to weather elements; must wear appropriate PPE required for the project site.
